ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The Richmond Shakespeare Festival at Agecroft Hall is a treasured part of Quill’s season, and a truly unique experience in Richmond. Come see ‘Shakespeare Under the Stars’, where we perform some of the Bard’s finest work in the courtyard of an authentic Tudor home built in the 16th century and brought over from Lancashire, England in 1926. There’s nothing else like it on the East coast!
THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE
The grounds open at 6pm for pre-show picnickers. Feel free to bring a blanket and a picnic dinner, and enjoy the beautiful gardens surrounding Agecroft, as well as the spectacular view from the Bluff. As you dine, members of Lord Moxley’s Players, the Festival Young Company, will stroll the grounds and entertain you with Shakespearean monologues, sonnets, and songs. The museum is not open for tours at this time. Please note: Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the grounds.
NEW THIS YEAR! Sara Lou’s SnoBalls will be onsite for every performance selling New Orleans Style SnoBalls. Additionally, Garden Grove Brewery of Carytown will be onsite for the second weekend of each show pouring a custom beer, created exclusively for the Festival! A portion of sales from these vendors will benefit Quill Theatre and Agecroft Hall.
We'll also be celebrating the 20th year of the Festival by co-sponsoring BardCycle. Join our resident Dramaturge and Shakespeare-Aficionado Mac MacDaniel as bikes across the country, visiting Shakespeare Festivals along the way. He'll be starting with us at Romeo and Juliet on June 1st! Follow him on Twitter and Instagram @BardCycle to follow his journey.

Back by popular demand! Last seen this April at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, join us for a special remounted run of Romeo and Juliet, the most famous love story of all time! The story: in Verona, Italy, torn by civil hatred and uncontrollable street brawling, the teenaged son and daughter of rival families meet by accident, and fall passionately in love. With the well-meaning but misguided assistance of Friar Lawrence and the Nurse, Romeo and Juliet marry in secret. Almost immediately, erupting violence and tragic deaths destroy the plan to reveal this marriage and unite their families. Romeo is exiled, and Juliet’s family, unaware she is already married, plan her wedding to another man. Desperate, the teens risk everything to rescue their doomed love….

This crazy comedy is an irreverent, high-speed roller coaster ride through the Bard’s plays. For the third year in a row, join our madcap trio as they weave their wacky way through Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies in one wild night that will leave you breathless and helpless with laughter.
This year, Quill Theatre is partnering with E.A.T. Foundation, a local non-profit whose mission is the eradication of food deserts and the promotion of food equality. They use pop-up dining events as a platform to educate, fundraise, and increase awareness of the problem of food-inequity throughout the community. Join us before the performance (6pm) of The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr for a special themed pop-up dinner on the terrace of Agecroft Hall. Ticket includes dinner, wine pairings, and reserved seating for the show. Space is limited!

Duke Frederick has overthrown his brother, Duke Senior, who has fled to the Forest of Arden with a group of followers, including a courtier named Jaques. Orlando complains to his old servant, Adam, that Orlando’s older brother, Oliver, is depriving Orlando of his education and inheritance. Oliver hears that Orlando plans to wrestle Charles, Duke Frederick’s champion, and incites Charles to kill Orlando in the bout. At the wrestling match, Orlando meets Rosalind, the banished Duke’s daughter, and they fall instantly in love. After Orlando wins the wrestling match and Duke Frederick hears that Orlando is the son of Sir Rowland, a friend of the banished Duke. Duke Frederick snubs Orlando instead of rewarding him. Rosalind, however, gives Orlando something of hers to wear. Duke Frederick banishes his niece Rosalind from court. Celia insists on accompanying Rosalind and they hatch a plan to take Touchstone the fool and seek the banished Duke in the Forest of Arden. Adam warns Orlando that Oliver plans to murder him and the two of them flee. Rosalind (disguised as a boy, “Ganymede”), Celia (disguised as Ganymede’s sister, “Aliena”), Touchstone, Orlando, and Adam reach the Forest of Arden, where the banished Duke Senior, Jaques, and other lords as well as the Arden natives Corin, Silvius, Phebe, and Audrey are philosophizing, and falling in love. All the trials and tangles work out in the end with four happy marriages.
